Tumblr Shutting Down

Recommended Posts

as Latbear says, Tumblr is NOT "shutting down" (as bibottomboy claims in the OP)........their announcement today says that adult content will be phased out beginning December 18......

https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/tumblr-ban-all-adult-content-n943226

there are plenty of better resources for LGBT youth trying to "find themselves" than Tumblr

yes, I will miss the many hundreds (thousands??) of tumblr sites with fantastic photography!

Given the amount of adult content on that site and the traffic that generates, many believe this will be the beginning of the end for Tumblr. Time will tell.

Isn't the only point of Tumblr porn?

For porn seekers, perhaps. As BiBoy states, Tumblr has been a great resource for community and support among many LGBT, particularly trans. It has 30-50 million active users, so it's definitely attracting more than just porn blogs.

… If they turn off the porn the site will be shut down in two months due to lack of revenue.

And apparently those who use Tumblr will care more than those who own it.

This is from CNN Business this morning (December 4):

Even if the new rules drive away users, the issue might not matter much for Verizon, Tumblr's parent company. Tumblr is now bundled in a collection of media properties that was until recently called Oath. The division has since been rebranded as Verizon Media Group.
"It's safe to say that Tumblr is pretty immaterial to Oath these days -- there is relatively little ad revenue there," said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research. "Changes probably wouldn't be noticeable to Oath, let alone to Verizon."

Nice article in the Post.

RIP Tumblr porn. You made me who I am.

"I don’t condone all of Tumblr’s explicit content. What’s wrong on Tumblr, such as depictions of abusive or nonconsensual sex acts, would be wrong elsewhere. But with the ethical stuff, Tumblr exposed me to forms of sexuality I had not previously considered and, even if they weren’t for me, expanded my thinking about sex and about myself.

It’s not that this content can’t be found elsewhere; it’s just that you probably won’t find it sandwiched between a “Queer Eye” meme and a character analysis of “Wonder Woman” anywhere else on the Web. Porn set side by side with not-porn empowered queer people to explore the full breadth of our interests in one scroll. It gave us the freedom to create and present a version of ourselves that didn’t minimize our sexuality, which we are so often pressured to do offline.

Such seemingly disparate elements finding a home together affirmed that art, sex, criticism, poetry and comedy need not be compartmentalized. One does not come at the expense of any of the others. It’s an especially important message for queer people whose content, sexual or not, often gets flagged as “adult.” Tumblr was a refuge from this kind of stigmatization."

Part of Tumblr's business problem was getting banned by the Apple App Store. Removing porn will let them get back. It's sad, since Reddit had the same problem and adjusted their app to hide sexually explicit content. Tumblr could have gotten back in the App Store and kept the significant block of users who are leaving.

Various posters are looking for new sites, and trying to download their blogs for a record. I and a few others are hitting bdsmlr.com, which is getting a lot of new business out of this. Growing pains there are showing however.

I am in Tumblr because it can mirror all the posts in my blog. I hardly sign in over there. Do you know if BDSMLR.com has a similar feature?

Tumblr seems to be already shut down. Try finding your favorite porn sites. Good Luck! This effort to wipe out an essential collection of porn is being conducted on a massive scale. I fearit is only the beginning for the evangelicals that Rump has empowered. Scary!

I opened a blog in BDSMLR.com and see no way to import my Tumblr blog. I just sent them an email asking how to. If they do not have an easy way to doing it as Wordpress and JustFor.Fans do, I do not think they can win this battle.
